Improve Treatment Options for Lung Cancer Patients
Results of lab and animal studies suggest astragalus could help fight lung cancer in the following ways:
How Does It Work?
Astragalus has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research suggests these properties could help block factors that promote lung cancer. Additionally, astragalus promotes proteins that induce cancer cell death.(140, 164, 165)
Clinical Evidence of Benefit
Clinical studies show that astragalus can improve quality of life in patients with advanced lung cancer. In one clinical trial, patients who were randomly assigned to receive astragalus along with combination chemotherapy had significant improvement in the following QOL indicators:(26)
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Pain
- Physical function
- Vomiting
Compared to placebo, patients taking astragalus also had better response and survival rates. However, these differences were not statistically significant.(26)
